Net Neutrality. Battle for the Internet

Net Neutrality. Battle for the Internet

It’s the Battle for the Internet

As an avid internet user i’ve been known to visit the odd website or two, I even occasionally use Google. Im joking of course! Something not to joke about is what’s happening in America right now, the Net Neutrality Bill. If you haven’t heard of this let me just sum up what this means to you.

  1. Websites wont be on an even playing field. ISP’s reserve the right to throttle sites that aren’t paying a ‘fast lane’ premium.
  2. In a nutshell thats it.

Of course there is much much more involved than simply that and you can read more about the implications and the extent of this reach on the USA Networks blog, here.

Net Neutrality. Battle for the Internet

That may not sound too bad right, wrong. The internet is a wonderful network or information that we can access at the click of a button and digest just as quickly. Wether you’re researching your next blog post or watching the latest episode of [insert current trending Netflix show here] you can be sure that without equality the small guys will get lost.

For example take the mom-and-pop at home startup. They keep bees or have a modest orchard and winery, they hire great web designer *ahem* to build a beautiful website but they simply do not have the funds to ‘rent’ bandwidth from the ISP and users have to wait an age for their site to load. What will happen? What do you do when a page doesn’t load instantly? Hit the back button, find the next result in the Google search and surf away. Good bye Happy Home Orchard.

This shouldn’t happen and in todays climate, setting SEO aside, everyone has the same rights to have their sites load, after the abolition or Net Neutrality you can kiss this goodbye. Is this the internet you want?

If you want to find out how you can help visit The Internet Defense League or Battle for the Net

Morgan Sindall transforms Phoenix Enterprise Park

Construction Photography for Morgan Sindall.

Braving the high winds to shoot Construction Photography may not be every photographer’s idea of a fun day at work. Personally, I think it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Once again, we joined Morgan Sindall, the construction and infrastructure company, to mark a key point in the first phase of its construction of the new Phoenix Enterprise Park on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate. The project team working on the £6.5 million scheme for Suffolk County Council, celebrated completing the super-structure of each unit by holding a topping out ceremony. The Event was attended by Councillor Jane Storey, Councillor Stephen Ardley, Julian Munson from New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, and design professionals, Concertus.

The site was destroyed by a fire in 2010 and the project team is now transforming part of the former Wessex Foods site into 16 small units which will be used for business, general industrial, or storage and distribution with external car parking and landscaping.

Documenting Construction Photography on a working site requires considerable levels of planning. We shoot all types of Construction Photography projects, both large and small, UK wide. We have a sound knowledge of photographing the construction industry from Ground Breaking ceremonies, Construction of industrial and commercial premises and numerous Construction based PR Photography Projects. We have shot regular progress photography on projects throughout the UK providing creative and technical images. Our work supports usage across all printed and digital media platforms. We shoot imagery to fit a wide range of marketing, tender, PR and portfolio building documents. We also hold a license for Commercial Drone Operation, which means that aerial Construction Photography can also be obtained along with commercial ground based video production.

Phoenix Enterprise Park is an exciting joint development between Suffolk County Council and New Anglia LEP, supported by Waveney District Council, to develop business units within the well-established South Lowestoft Industrial Estate. The first phase will provide a range of small and medium units (up to 320 square metres) and is a key project, bringing jobs and regeneration to the town.

The Hadenham Road site is included in New Anglia LEP’s Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft Enterprise Zone and is owned by the county council. All businesses moving onto the Enterprise Zone site prior to 1st April 2018 will potentially benefit from a business rate discount of up to £275k over a 5 year period (maximum of £55k per year).

Saul Humphrey, Morgan Sindall’s managing director for the East, said: “It’s a great pleasure to be celebrating the good progress our team is making in bringing this site back to life. We’re pleased to be playing a role in transforming this land which was destroyed by fire into a location with a positive economic and social impact and offer a useful service to the local business community.”

Suffolk County Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Jane Storey said: I would like to praise the work undertaken by everyone involved in this project that has helped us get to this significant point. I would particularly like to thank the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership for their continued support and financial contribution through Growth Deal funding to help us lock the potential for future business development in this location. I look forward to seeing the completed business units on site in the spring and welcoming the first new tenants as they begin their exciting future and help us to kickstart the south Lowestoft Enterprise Zone.

Andrew Rowe, Managing Director at Concertus Design & Property Consultants said: “I am delighted to be celebrating this milestone at Phoenix Enterprise Park, the team’s collaborative working goes hand in hand with the project’s success. A big thank you to everyone for their hard work so far.”

Julian Munson, Head of Innovation and Enterprise Zones at New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The redevelopment of this site is testament to the confidence that exists in Lowestoft right now. Our Enterprise Zone sites continue to be a catalyst for economic growth and job creation and we’re confident Phoenix Enterprise Park will only add to that. When completed the Park will offer high quality facilities and a real opportunity for new and expanding businesses.”

Morgan Sindall was appointed to the scheme via the £500 million Suffolk County Council construction framework, which is a vehicle for the procurement of public sector building works and governs the procurement of a full spectrum of new build and refurbishment schemes in education, health and community across Suffolk.

Advice For Freelance Remote Work Success – A great guide from Trello

Remote Work Success - Trello

Advice For Freelance Remote Work Success. – A great guide from the guys at Trello.

Remote Work may not be for everybody! Personally, I work remotely, wherever I am in the world I am at my desk. For some people that sounds like a huge burden, and sure I understand that, but the reality is that I have total freedom. I am not tied into the morning commute, fixed lunch breaks or a uniform, some days I work in short and flip flops!

Gaining clients in a freelance world is only half the battle, the other half is managing them. I have tried many different methods to keep on top of projects from bouncing emails back and forth to relying on Skype or Facebook Messenger (I know it sounds crazy) but until very recently I hadn’t been able to find a solution that works for me. Enter Trello.

Trello - Remote Work Success

What is Trello? In a nutshell:

Trello is the easy, free, flexible, and visual way to manage your projects and organize anything, trusted by millions of people from all over the world.

I don’t work for these guys and i’m not endorsed to offer shameless plugs but as far as remote management tools go these guys have it nailed!

I use Trello in conjunction with Slack. Slack basically creates a simple, navigable way to work in a remote office. Slack has been talked about, debated and discussed the internet over so I won’t outline what they do or how they do it but suffice to say they have worked hard to provide a great service that fosters a professional remote working environment.

I have used Slack/Trello alternatives such as Asana and have found that whilst Asana has some awesome features it isn’t as to-the-point and simple to dive into as Slack and Trello.

So why Trello?

Well for me its the ease and simplicity of its design. You can create boards, lists and then cards. My methodology is:

Board – Clientcentric
List – For the type of task, so for example “Blog Images”
Card – For the attachments.

It saves so much time drafting emails with concepts, everything is kept nice and ordered and can always be sent onto other people within the pipeline without having to forward a potentially personal email you sent to your client or having to write something new.

Trello interacts directly with Slack too. So you can easily post your content right to your remote office without having to duplicate anything at all.

In my opinion the marriage of these two platforms makes freelance project management a breeze.

Trello needn’t be about just the freelance market either. There is a very real appeal to any employ within a normal business. Everybody knows that people are more productive when they’re happy right? Lauren Moon over on Trello has kindly written an interesting blog about how the platform can work for employers everywhere.

“Let’s say it nice and loud for the people in the back:

Remote work is here, and it’s revolutionizing the way we work.

Technology has advanced such that embracing remote is no longer challenging. It requires different considerations for collaboration and communication, sure, but ultimately it is not a lower quality work experience.

How do we know? Because we are proving it out as a team right now, and so are some of the fastest-growing teams in tech.

If you’re not on the remote train yet, we’ve got you covered. We wrote a guide all about the benefits, considerations, and best practices of remote work. These are the most important tips and tried-and-tested practices we’ve picked up along the way of building out our 65% remote team.” – Trello Blog

There is even a great PDF guide that I encourage you all to grab and read through, it’s far better put together than my musings here but I encounter the “I can’t work remotely, I don’t know how to function…”type attitude all the time so thought i’d share this with you.

New Drone Laws Set for UK

Commercial Drone Services Norwich

Recreational Drone Flyers to Be Regulate Under New Drone Laws

New Drone Laws are set to be passed for the UK including the possibility of competency testing under legislation planned by the government. The New Drone Laws follow huge increases in the sales of drones to untrained recreational flyers, escalating near miss reports and increases in Drone based criminal activity.

Drone Filming with Lee Blanchflower Ltd from Blanc Creative on Vimeo.

The crackdown on irresponsible flying in the UK may include;

New Drone Laws restricting maximum flight altitude to 400 feet for recreational flyers (in line with current legislation for Commercial Operators)

Banning the use of Drones weighing more than 250g from flying near airports. or above 400 ft, in a crackdown on unsafe flying.

New Drone Laws may allow Police to seize Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles believed to be linked to criminal activity.

New Drone Laws to Include Mandatory Registration and Safety Tests

Like all technology, drones are open to misuse. “Introducing safety awareness tests to educate users we can reduce the inadvertent breaching of airspace restrictions to protect the public,” said aviation minister Lord Callanan in a statement. The government’s intention is set to to ensure all new users of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles other than children’s toys are centrally registered. It remains unknown quite how legislation will be implemented and the details at this stage remain vague to say the very least. It Recreational Drone Flyers may be able to register online with mandatory testing set to cover key areas include privacy, safety and security aspects of flying Drones.

Purchasing of Drones through online retailers based outside of the UK mean that registration can be easily avoided. The physical amount of drone sales in the UK would be complete guesswork. Until now, there has been no requirement to track how many units are in operation unless Drones are used as a commercial operation tool. The CAA has seen a ten fold increase in the past year, with over 3150 licemsed operators working in the UK alone. There are likely to be literally thousands of recreational flyers who will be affected by New Drone Laws.

New Drone Laws for UK

Near Misses

British miltech boffinry outfit Qinetiq document 34  drone-related Airprox incidents up until the end of May and these are purely the reported incidents without any other type of non aircraft incidents that have affected public, vehicles and buildings.  The Drone Code was developed to advise new Drone Users of the basic safety elements and laws surrounding Drone Flying but this is purely informational and not a legal requirement.

This month we’ve been shooting PR Photography ss part of National School Meals Week. Norse Catering teamed up with Norfolk Food and Drink, to provide a number of the company’s school cooks with the opportunity to work alongside some of the county’s top chefs. The concept behind the National School Meals Week is to help change perceptions of school meals in our region and demonstrate how far school catering has come in recent years. We returned to a fantastic kitchen for a second year to capture the experience as part of our ongoing PR Photography work with NORSE Commercial Services.

The White Horse at Brancaster, an award-winning restaurant situated on the marshland coastline of North Norfolk. The White Horse is where the story of Anglian Country Inns (ACI) began and what was a run down old pub is now The White Horse coastal Inn (which incidentally won the Good Hotel Guide Seaside Hotel of the year and Editor’s Choice award three years running). The Brancaster White Horse is a family run business rooted in a love of good food and proper old fashioned hospitality, which extended again this year to hosting a NORSE School Cook into the heart of their kitchen.

There’s nothing quite like shooting PR Photography without a prescribed brief or having to set up a whole host of pre planned images. The working station for dessert and afternoon teas was a dedicate area within the kitchen and a perfect location for shooting all sides of the delicate operation of produce some glorious puddings and structured sandwiches. The finishes products were shot against the backdrop of the restaurant along with some natural business portrait photography.

Group Operations Director Mark Emms said; “Norse cooks are seriously talented cooks in their own right, and to create a fantastic experience for them we sent them to the best restaurants across the region. They joined the teams at Warwick St Social with Daniel Smith, at The White Horse in Brancaster, Brasted’s in Framingham Pigot and at Benedicts in Norwich with well-known local chef Richard Bainbridge, to prepare and cook meals for their discerning paying customers.

“We are really proud of the positive work going on in our schools and we want to tell people about it, even if they do not have children at school. Norse provides almost 4 million meals a year across 250 Norfolk and Suffolk schools – feeding the minds of the next generation.”

The Rise in Advertising Photography!

Social Media has never been so popular. New platforms are literally being developed by the day and almost half a million Images a day land on the pages of Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Snapchat and Pinterest. People interact with Advertising Photography. You only need to ask yourself… How many times will you actually engage with a story on a website where it’s not accompanied by a photograph. I imagine the answer is ‘Hardly Ever.’  Advertising Photography used on many Big News Websites use a combination of seductive photography to draw in readers to stories that often don’t even reflect anything about the content on the story they are posting. It just goes to shows the power that good Advertising Photography can bring to your business. don’t even use imagery  are you With everyone snap happy with their cameras on their phones more and more pictures are viewed and all of a sudden everyone claims to be a professional photographer but both you and our photographers at Marked Perception know this is not the case.

Great Visual Content Will Work for Your Business.

Rather than relying on generic stock photos for your Advertising Photography, the smartest businesses are looking to photographers who can shoot high quality Advertsing Photographs. People can see Stock Photographs that are more often than not used across numerous sites. Business will often search for popular, trending stock photographs because they want something that’s current, but this usually ends up in carbon copy websites with non specific images that are not reflective of your own business. Advertsing Photography will help businesses evolve their brand and tell a visual story of who they are. Marketing is all about communicating your values. The use of commercial photography is an excellent opportunity to create a solid call to action or message for your business that makes you unique.

Why use a Commercial Photographer to go visual?

You have a great image bank of inspiration right in front of you, but a photographer who works solely in the Commercial Industry will have an eye for composition, will pick out details that many inexperienced hobbyists will miss and be able to work quickly and effectively to maximise your product or service, essentially saving you money. It’s all about experience and no amount of automated Iphone Photography or Smart Phone imagery is going to look like professional Advertising Photography, especially if you need to have the images printed onto any business branding or documents. People look for emotional value and they make buying decisions based on their instinct. Your business content does not have to revolve solely around text. Build in copy spaces around your imagery. A text and image mixed media post is extremely useful and if you take it to the next level, Video Content has exploded into the Business World, But that’s another Blog Post. Advertising Photography and other visual materials should be the goto source so using a professional photographer will land you a bank of useable images that you can populate your e-mails, website and marketing material and help engagement and click-throughs.

A recent assignment saw me photographing our latest Headshot Photography assignment for NORSE Commercial Services. I was asked to provide new images that would be used fo a variety of purposes including Press Releases, Business Documents and a range of Social Media Platforms. Headshot photography is a necessity for the majority of businesses that enables, business suppliers, clients colleagues to place a visual image of the person they will be communicating with or working alongside. There has been a huge step away from studio based headshot photography shot against plain, unflattering backgrounds and a steer towards environmental portrait photography shot at a subjects place of work of somewhere relevant to the business.

Isle of Wight Festival – The Weekend in Pictures

Kaiser Chiefs Live at Isle of Wight Festival

The Isle of Wight Festival is renowned as “The’ Festival that opens the UK’s Festival season every summer. The heritage of The Isle of Wight Festival stretches almost half a century and it’s stages have hosted some of the Biggest names in the history of music. Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Jay-Z, Bon Jovi, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Doors, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen. The list just goes on on and on.

The Festival is owned by John Giddings, an Isle of Wight resident and businessman as well as an established music promoter. Jon Giddings took over the Isle of Wight Festival in 2002, curating every part of the Festival. An amicable, approachable gentleman, he can be found flying around in a Golf Buggy or look after the needs of the celebrity guests backstage. His feet are firmly rooted to the Festival site and this personal attention is one of the reasons, the Isle of Wight Festival remains one of the most sought after Events of the Year.

Isle of Wight Festival Owner John Giddings

Isle of Wight Festival Owner John Giddings

I’m a huge believer in fate, so what better way to begin a great career as a Professional Music Photographer and Videographer. Seven years ago a commercial photography career involving concert music didn’t exist and Lee Blanchflower had never shot a band. A chance encounter on Facebook with my good friend and international drumming legend Steve Barney, led to spending some backstage time with ‘The Wanted’ and another impromptu photoshoot with a pretty much unheard of band called ‘Lawson.’ One magazine publication later and a number of locked doors opened for me as if by magic into the crazy world of ‘Three Songs, No Flash’ and a once in a lifetime chance to work in close proximity with some of the the greatest music artists on the planet. It was the start of almost a decade shooting Musivc Photography, Concert Photography & Festival Photography, before being signed up to an International Agency in 2013.

Working as a Commercial Photographer and shooting Professional Press Photography opens doors to some great working environments. We love the Isle of Wight Festival. Heading out on the Ferry is almost like traveling abroad with all of the home comforts of being in the UK. In 2017, the weather held despite some vey shady forecast and the wellington boots were dispatched to the boot of the car and replaced with bandanas and suncream. Working with a dedicated wiring assistant, we covered press imagery from Friday through to Sunday shooting for a well known Press Agency and supplying images to The Daily Mail, The Sun and a number of independent newspapers.

Every once in a while a Photographer will get a lucky a nice ‘exclusive photography set’, where nobody else gets images. We took our chance at the Isle of Wight Festival with Professional Footballer Peter Crouch & model wife, Abbey Clancy. The pair spent the weekend partying at the Isle of Wight Festival and turned up early Sunday morning to carry on partying after a late night and watch Abbey’s brother John, frontman in the band, Judas.

We work solely in the commercial sector with sole traders, start-ups, established businesses, Advertising Agencies & International Press covering everything from PR, Editorial work, Film Production and Licensed Drone operations.  What you won’t find, are wedding photographs, pet photography or family portraits.  We seriously pride ourselves as being “people’ people and our unique selling point is transparency. Our favourable pricing structures are visible for every one of our services, so you won’t find  any nasty surprises once you’ve decided to book an assignment.
