Forest Live Concerts – Drone Filming

Licensed Drones Norwich

Concert Drone Filming For Forestry Commission England

Drone Filming Norfolk

Forest Live Concerts Thetford High Lodge

The opportunities for Commercial Drone Filming at a large concert is something of a rare beast. Drones receive considerably more negative publicity than positive and the ‘perceived’ high risk element of Drone usage at large public gatherings is a subject that has historically caused Concert Promoters to shudder. In all truth, assigning a professional drone operator who is licensed with a Permission For Commercial Operation (PFCO) means that all possible safety elements will be covered as much as is humanly possible.

It therefore came a huge surprise when the chance presented itself to ‘Legally’ provide Licensed Drone Filming and Drone Photography in one of the most beautiful and secluded concert locations in the country, Thetford High Lodge on the Norfolk Suffolk Border.

In 2001, Forestry Commission England chose seven fantastic forest locations to host concerts from a range of international artists. Each summer, open spaces within UK forests are transformed into fantastic concert arenas. The stunning locations are simply unique and the events were so well received, that 2018 will mark the 17th year of Forest Live and access to some of the most impressive artists in the whole of the Music Industry including;

2017 Sir Tom Jones, Rick Astley, Clean Bandit, Craig David, Elbow, Olly Murs

2016 Rudimental, Kaiser Chiefs, UB40 feat. Ali, Astro & Mickey, Tom Jones, Guy Garvey, John Newman, Jake Bugg, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, Simply Red, James Bay

2015 Paloma Faith, Tom Odell, The Vamps, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, Sam Smith, The Script, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, Spandau Ballet, McBusted, James

2014 Paul Weller, Jessie J, Boyzone, Suede, Rebecca Ferguson, James Blunt, Katherine Jenkins, Deacon Blue, Little Mix and The Pogues.

2013 Paloma Faith, Blondie, Paul Weller, The Script, Olly Murs, Jessie J, The Charlatans, James, Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, Elvis Costello.

Forest Live Concerts

For the past four years, the Lee Blanchflower Limited Team have been providing not only Editorial Photography for local press, but have also worked directly with the Forestry Commission & Forest Live to document the family atmosphere and performers who take to the tree lined stage in Thetford Forest each year. The introduction of Drone Filming provided it’s own challenges and this where using a Licensed Drone Operator is so important for businesses that are looking to secure Commercial Drone Filming.

The Civil Aviation authority have a rigorous legislation in place to ensure that Licensed Drone Operators comply with restrictions set in either congested areas or large gatherings in open air places. You can read more about this important subject in our Blogs “Drone Flying in Congested Areas” & “Flying Drones at Large Open Area Gatherings” but in addition to extensive risk assessments, Thetford Forest is nestled conveniently inside a Military Aerodrome Traffic Zone. Working closely with Forestry Commission Management and the Military Air Base, we were able to secure take-off, landing and flight zones that ensured we could maximise Drone Filming and Drone Photography without impacting on Concert Customers or the Military while ensuring a safe flight protocol. Drone filming took place over a period of two days to create material that offered a dual purpose.

Planning – The footage and still imagery was used to document all aspects of the Concert site and incorporated everything from car parking, placement of vendors, toilets, amenities and arena details. This was particularly useful for organisers when planning for future events.

Promotional – Drone filming gives a totally different perspective of the venue and showcases the phenomenal venue and scale of Forestry that the concert Arena sits within at Thetford. Drones offer an affordable, flexible means of capturing aerial imagery and an eco friendly option when compared to other means of photographing or filming from the air.

What is Press Photography

What is Press Photography – A Guide stepping on the Press Ladder!

Norwich Press Photography

We’ve all heard the term Press Photography, but what does it really cover. Media Photography or Photojournalism is a professional photographer who captures images of current stories, events or newsworthy occurrences for news agencies, printed newspapers, magazines, and news websites. Fort longer term reportage or documentary style pieces, the term photojournalist is a wider used term, however, press photography and photojournalism often cross over during the course of work. As a full time professional photographer working in the commercial industry, Press Photography was a natural progression. Blanc Creative built a solid reputation in Norwich before moving into the world of media and corporate imagery and video throughout the UK.

To succeed in the industry you will need a certain set of skills. Just because you can hold a camera and may have had the local newspaper print an image of sunset in their readers section, doesn’t mean that you will do well in the world of press photography It can be a demanding, fsst past role with long hours and have good technical knowledge of all camera equipment

Have visual composition and perspective skills to make for newsworthy images.
Have a good understanding of image-management software (photo Mechanic etc) and photo manipulation software (treat manipulation with caution and read this article for full clarification)
Know your camera inside out. You’ll need to work in all conditions on the fly
Look for situations that are developing into news images. It’s all about to capture ‘The moment’ when and as it happens
work quickly and don’t crumble under pressure.
Be prepared to wait for age for a very short timeframe of work.
Have excellent communication skills
Expect to work copious amounts of hours for very little in return. You won’t be getting the ‘Scoop’ every day or every week.

What Qualifications Do You Need?

It really depends on age, experience and reputation. If you’ve never worked in the industry, never been a professional photographer, just left school and have no solid experience, then you’re likely to need at least five GCSEs, including English, and/or two years’ experience in photography, or a further education qualification in photography. There are lots of College and University courses available that will provide a sound technical grounding, but whatever way you look at it, there is no experience… Like Experience!

Images are generally shot on location, using hand-held digital cameras with a portable flash and photographers tend to have their own wifi set up and fast laptops. The faster the images are uploaded to News Agencies, the faster the chances that your images will be purchased by Press or Newspapers. Picture desks like to have images so they have exclusive stories or breaking news. Press Photography is essentially about uploading a handful of high quality, new worthy images to accompany a news story. Many Newspaper and magazine Photography freelancers now work on commission only basis. The days of in house commissioned photographers are numbered, They are a dying breed. Images are generally bought ‘on spec’ (speculatively) if it is of a high standard or features a subject not covered by their own photographers.

PR and Press photography is often scheduled in advance, particularly for pre planned visits or events. Monthly diaries are released by prerss agencies to their freelancers where accreditation is required. Photographers will be scheduled in advance and independent agencies will brief freelance press photographers on the type of shots required.

NUJ (National Union of Journalists) is a good sign that a freelancer is a Professional Press Photojournalist. Membership is through proposal / seconding of accredited referees and providing a portfolio of press articles and publications where work has been used professionally. Being a member certainly isn’t the be all and end all, but it will give you some credibility within the industry and offers elements of legal advice and support for photographers when they require it. To read further articles about Photography and videography, why not head over to the Blanc Creative Blog. Norwich Commercial Photography – The Big Green Plan

In 2015, Norwich Commercial Photography business, Blanc Creative worked on an extensive project with one of Norfolk’s most renowned Poultry Farming businesses and Family Food Brands, Bernard Matthews. Having served half of the homes in the UK with Turkey for over 65 years, Bernard Matthews plans to be the greenest farmer in the UK by 2020. Blanc Creative have built a reputation for high quality images and exceptional customer service providers and work only as a dedicated Commercial Photography business. Following a dedicated brief,  Blanc Creative were assigned to capture the latest sustainable energy sources that Bernard Matthews are using within their business, which would be taken forward as the primary image source for the new website ‘THE BIG GREEN PLAN.”  Norfolk Commercial Photography - Bernard Matthews

Everyone recognises the importance of green energy – learning to better manage the world’s resources and protect the environment for future generations. Business clearly has a role to play in helping to support and champion this agenda, both as a responsible part of the local and global community and to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for the business. This is why Bernard Matthews created the ‘Big Green Plan’ – a blue-print for working with nature’s resources to responsibly develop and grow our business. Bernard Matthews want to play a role in the ongoing protection of the natural environment, which as a food and farming business is at the heart of their values. Secondly, through a wide range of initiatives we want to create a sustainable future for the company, by helping make it more efficient in the way it uses energy.

As the UK’s largest turkey farmer, and a major supplier to many of the country’s leading supermarkets, wBernard Matthews have an important role to play in preserving and protecting the environment. From managing our carbon footprint to exploring renewable energy, their sustainability principals are  committed to making a difference to the environment.

Like many other businesses and individuals that own significant land, Bernard Matthews have manage  their land and building assets as effectively as possible. Whether it’s installing wind or solar farms on un-used land or improving their overall energy efficiency across the business, developing green energy solutions seemed the most effective way to make an impact on local and global sustainability.

It’s for these reasons Bernard Matthews embarked on a long-term, comprehensive energy efficient programme that stretches across our farms and our factories.

Our Brief

Blanc Creative were commissioned to deliver a set of images that reflected Bernard Matthews commitment to the environment and sustainable energy across their business including Wind Power, Solar Energy, Anaerobic Digestion & Biomass Boilers. These components formed THE BIG GREEN PLAN from farm to factory and providing high quality visual imagery of sustainable farming and factories.

Wind power

Norfolk Agricultural Photography - Bernard Matthews

Wind energy is a key part of our sustainability strategy to generate as much renewable energy as we consume. We have already entered into a number of key partnerships and as a result have nine large scale wind turbines (125m in height) installed across three sites in East Anglia; Holton and Weston in Suffolk, and Pickenham in Norfolk.

Solar Power

Solar presents a real opportunity for businesses like us to not only generate green energy at a lower price, but also helps reduce carbon emissions. To date, in partnership with Belectric and RenEnergy, Bernard Matthewsvbuilt a 55 acre solar farm on their Holton site in Suffolk – this alone generates 10.1MW of electricity. Building is under way for a second 35 acre solar farm at Weston, and a number of other smaller scale installations around their other key sites.

As a food business Bernard Matthews have an important role to play in reducing the amount of waste they create. Not only are they able to save energy and natural resources, Bernard Matthews also reduce pollution and the need to landfill.

In 2013, they built an anaerobic digestion plant at the Holton production site generating power and heat from factory waste. Gas produced by the plant is supplied to a combined heat and power gas engine (CHP). In 2016, the plants will have a second CHP installed on the Holton site. With both engines running at full power they will provide over 1Mw of electrical energy, enough power for over 2128 homes, and a further 1Mw of heat energy (hot water).

Biomass Boilers

 Norwich Commercial Photography
Norwich Commercial Photography

The biomass project has been the largest biomass installation in the country with 209 boilers being installed across 30 of ours farms in East Anglia. The project has further reduce reliance on greenhouse gas omitting, fossil fuels such as LPG, heating oil and natural gas. The biomass boilers have also helped reduce   energy costs, in-house ammonia levels and improve ventilation. Drier heat reduces ammonia level from the boilers, thus enhancing animal welfare.
