PR Photography is a form of commercial imagery which comes with a news angle. PR Photography is the cornerstone of many individuals, businesses or charities. Images are used to accompany anything from Good News Stories, Public Relations, awards, achievements.. Pretty much anything that increases the profile. PR Photography is literally found on every avenue of media from printed media, newspapers, magazines or online through social media and the many news websites across the globe.

Through shares, likes and press coverage these photographs can help raise the profile of a business, charity or person in what might be considered an organic way.

How does PR Photography differ from other Advertising Photography?

May Press outlets or Newspapers will take an interest in genuine PR stories that may make worthy news stories or generate sales of their product. PR photography tells a story and usually the imagery is set around the news article and a press release it relate to. Photographs have to be interesting and the use PR Photography re-enforces the key messages of the storytelling. More often than not, Agencies will send out embargoed documents that mean the photographer has the information needed deliver the story, but cannot use the information until such time that the time and date on the embargo have been reached. in the music industry, agencies may send out Editorial Information to Newspapers and websites of album releases or artist tour announcements. PR Photography is about promoting business.

PR Photography – Dragons Den

We’ve been shooting PR Photography for our clients for many years and our PR Photography has been seen in many publications and through all manner of websites and social media. One example of our PR Photography was working with Ross Mendham and the Barenaked Foods Brand. The Barenaked Food Company shot to fame after pitching their business to Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Kelly Hoppen, Deborah Meaden and Piers Linney on BBC Tv Show Dragons Den. A £60,000 investment from businessman Peter Jones on television show Dragons’ Den launched the product in 2013. It went into health food shops, was picked up by Morrisons and is now seen as a mainstream product on the shelves of literally all of the mainstream supermarkets in the UK. We worked with Barenaked Foods to provide PR Photography as the brand prepared to launch in Morissons Supermarket, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

This month we’ve been shooting PR Photography ss part of National School Meals Week. Norse Catering teamed up with Norfolk Food and Drink, to provide a number of the company’s school cooks with the opportunity to work alongside some of the county’s top chefs. The concept behind the National School Meals Week is to help change perceptions of school meals in our region and demonstrate how far school catering has come in recent years. We returned to a fantastic kitchen for a second year to capture the experience as part of our ongoing PR Photography work with NORSE Commercial Services.

The Brancaster White Horse in Norfolk

The White Horse at Brancaster, an award-winning restaurant situated on the marshland coastline of North Norfolk. The White Horse is where the story of Anglian Country Inns (ACI) began and what was a run down old pub is now The White Horse coastal Inn (which incidentally won the Good Hotel Guide Seaside Hotel of the year and Editor’s Choice award three years running). The Brancaster White Horse is a family run business rooted in a love of good food and proper old fashioned hospitality, which extended again this year to hosting a NORSE School Cook into the heart of their kitchen.

There’s nothing quite like shooting PR Photography without a prescribed brief or having to set up a whole host of pre planned images. The working station for dessert and afternoon teas was a dedicate area within the kitchen and a perfect location for shooting all sides of the delicate operation of produce some glorious puddings and structured sandwiches. The finishes products were shot against the backdrop of the restaurant along with some natural business portrait photography.

Group Operations Director Mark Emms said; “Norse cooks are seriously talented cooks in their own right, and to create a fantastic experience for them we sent them to the best restaurants across the region. They joined the teams at Warwick St Social with Daniel Smith, at The White Horse in Brancaster, Brasted’s in Framingham Pigot and at Benedicts in Norwich with well-known local chef Richard Bainbridge, to prepare and cook meals for their discerning paying customers.

“We are really proud of the positive work going on in our schools and we want to tell people about it, even if they do not have children at school. Norse provides almost 4 million meals a year across 250 Norfolk and Suffolk schools – feeding the minds of the next generation.”

Top PR Photography Tips

Top PR Photography Tips

PR. What is it exactly? What is PR? Is it Copy? Is it about Press Releases? Is it about PR Photography? In some way it’s about all three but there is no getting away from the fact that high quality PR Photography imagery cannot be underestimated. Grab a magazine or daily paper and most of the images you see accompanying stories are shot to catch the readers eye in a creative, impactive way?

As a professional PR Photographer, the challenges convincing clients of the importance of  images for their PR is immense. The following five points are pretty straight forward

Including a professional PR image with your press release will generate engagement more than word alone. We live in an age where  huge amounts of emphasis on social media is based around images and video. People can’t be bothered to read lots of text (In fact, you may not even be bothered to want to read this, but hey (Yoast says a blog should be at least 300 words..) A picture says a thousand words. Making the photo stand out in a professional, eye catching manner. Images in your press release will grab a journalist’s attention and help you tell the story.

Think about the different images you might need. It’s useful to have a variety of shots — from your product in action, to cut outs to your product on a plain white background. That way, your shots will be appropriate for most uses.

It’s always a good idea to invest in a proper photo shoot. Never underestimate what a photographer can do for your brand. Outside of the business of actually taking the photos, a good photographer can advise on the kind of images you need to show your business to its best advantage, provide lighting and professional backdrops and develop creative ideas to really make you stand out from the crowd.

Deliver High Resolution Images. It’s essential that you can provide newspapers and magazines high-res images. Images will need to be at least 300 dpi and usually over 1.5MB.  Investing in a decent file transfer system such as Wetransfer will make the process of electronic delivery a smoother and more enjoyable experience in the absence of Press FTP’s.

Eye Surgeon PR Story

Manage the branding in your pictures. Throwing a product or a story into every part of the image will just make you look amateur and makes the product or story look desperate.  Over-branding, whatever market the image is aimed at, will just kill the picture in an editors eyes straight away. There are times when you simply can’t get away from it because clients will naturally want to promote their business / logo / brand. Just try and be subtle and incorporate it into the story. It’s not always needed.
